The Silicon Valley history and Achievement

Silicon Valley refers to thesouthern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California in the United States. The region is home to many of the world's largest technology corporations.

Silicon Valley is the original home to the semiconductor chip making industry that uses silicon (fine sand!) as a basic raw material, prompting a newspaper writer one day to call it Silicon Valley.

The term originally referred to the region's large number of silicon chipinnovators and manufacturers, but eventually came to refer to all thehigh-tech businesses in the area; it is now generally used as ametonym for the American high-tech sector.

This industry in turn has spawned the revolution in electronics miniaturization, and along with that many other software and equipment companies. This place is credited for the development of different applications used in home broadbandconnections, mobile phones, medical equipment and other electronics. Since the name was coined by the press media, it has no specific boundaries, but does show the power of naming to position a region - just like products and companies get positioned.

Geographically, the Silicon Valley encompasses all of the Santa Clara Valley including the city of San Jose (and adjacent communities), the southernPeninsula, and the southern East Bay.

In 1971, in a series of articles that Don Hoefler wrote for ELECTRONIC NEWS, a weekly tabloid, he first used the phrase "SiliconValley" to describe the congeries of electronics firms mushroomingin Santa Clara county. "He pioneered the coverage of Silicon Valley as a distinct community," - said Michael S. Malone, author of a book chronicling the industry called THE BIG SCORE."When we think of Silicon Valley as a collection of charactersand eccentrics, he's the one who put that whole idea in our minds,"- said Malone.

The industry began through experimentation and innovation in the fields of radio, television, and military electronics. Stanford University, its affiliates, and graduates have played a major role in the development of this area.[4] Some examples include the work ofLee De Forest with his invention of a pioneering vacuum tube called the Audion and the oscilloscopes of Hewlett-Packard.

Silicon Valley is the only place on Earth not trying to figure out how to become Silicon Valley. Robert Metcalfe
