Why too many Fires in Poland on the New Year's Weekend

1027 Fires, 12 People Dead in Poland on the New Year's Weekend

From Friday to Sunday, firefighters were involved in extinguishing 1027 fires, in which 12 people were killed and 43 were injured. On the New Year’s Day 4 people died in 478 fires, 21 were injured – a fire service spokesman Paul Fratczak said.

“In total, in the last two days of last year and in the first day of the new year we intervened 2402 times. Only on the New Year's Eve we were extinguishing 240 fires; on the New Year's Day a total of 478 fires – it is about 135 more than last year – Fratczak said.

He added that the most tragic fires occurred on a Friday night in Biala Podlaska, where a house fire killed seven people and in the town of Ostrow in Podkarpacie, where on the New Year's Eve two adults and a child were killed.

According to the spokesman, plenty of fires occurred because safety procedures were not followed when firing firecrackers or fireworks.

"Mostly there were small fires of roofs, balconies and garbage which we were able to extinguish quickly" – Fratczak added.
