Guinea Bissau’s former head of military intelligence was shot dead

Guinea Bissau’s former head of military intelligence was shot dead at a bar in the capital Bissau overnight just hours after a peaceful presidential vote, witnesses and a security source said yesterday.

The shooting of the former military intelligence chief, Colonel Samba Diallo, comes after a quiet election day in Guinea Bissau, according to official sources on Monday. The election follows the death in January of President Malam Bacai Sanha.

Guinea Bissau's former head of military intelligence was shot dead at a bar near his residence in the capital Bissau late on Sunday, hours after citizens voted peacefully in a presidential election, witnesses and a security source said.

Minister of Defense Baciro Dja noted that the former military officer was shot to death at a bar, underlining that the action seems to be linked to old political disappearances.

Dja pointed out that the violent action is under investigation and more details about it could be released in the next few hours.

On the other hand, a witness assured he saw Diallo's body at a hospital in the capital, while another one affirmed that soldiers shot the former officer and then took away the corpse.

It is not clear why he was shot but he was previously linked to a 2009 bombing which killed the then army chief.

Diallo had served as head of military intelligence under ex-Army Chief of Staff Jose Zamora Induta until the two were deposed and temporarily jailed in an April 2010 mutiny that Western diplomats said was likely over control of the lucrative drugs trade between Latin America and Europe.

Former prime minister and ruling party presidential candidate Carlos Gomes Junior also was briefly arrested during the mutiny, but he has since said he has developed a "good working relationship with the military".
